Ridge
14 – 21 m elevation
Exposed upper ridge with full sun and wind. Requires deep-rooting, wind-tolerant species for long-term soil anchoring.
Eriogonum grande rubescens Acacia iteaphylla
Mid Slope
7 – 14 m elevation
Primary erosion control zone. California native salvias and shrubs form a dense root network to stabilize the main slope face.
Lepechinia fragrans 'El Tigre' Penstemon 'Margarita BOP' ×2 Penstemon eatonii Salvia 'Pozo Blue' Salvia 'Winifred Gilman' Salvia apiana Salvia mellifera Salvia 'Aromas' Cistus ladanifer Solidago californica Ceanothus 'Pigeon Point' Agave attenuata (dominant)
Lower Slope
0 – 7 m elevation
Base of hillside with highest moisture retention. Dense succulent and groundcover planting for immediate surface stabilization.
Aeonium 'Zwartkop' Aeonium 'Kiwi' Salvia 'Dara's Choice' Salvia sonomensis 'Mrs. Beard' Senecio vitalis Agave attenuata (dominant)
Under Consideration

Plants being evaluated for future planting. Prioritizing shallow, fibrous root systems suited to sandy decomposed granite. Must not destabilize rock substrate.

Dudleya species
Dudleya spp. (Liveforever)
Native rosette succulents for rock faces and cliff edges. Extremely shallow roots, perfect for sandy substrate. Drought-proof. Several species native to LA coastal hills. Would complement agaves on exposed rock.
Zone: Ridge rock faces · CA Native
Artemisia californica
California Sagebrush
Backbone of coastal sage scrub. Fibrous root system perfect for sandy soil. Aromatic silver-green foliage. Would pair with existing salvias to recreate native plant community. Fast establisher.
Zone: Mid Slope · CA Native
Encelia californica
California Bush Sunflower
Bright yellow daisy-like flowers, fast-growing native shrub. Shallow lateral roots bind sand effectively. Great pollinator magnet and pairs well with buckwheat on the upper slope.
Zone: Mid-Upper Slope · CA Native
Epilobium canum
California Fuchsia
Brilliant red-orange tubular flowers, late summer bloomer. Hummingbird magnet when salvias finish. Spreads by runners for rapid groundcover. Excellent for dry sandy banks.
Zone: Mid Slope · CA Native
Acacia replacement TBD
Evaluating native alternatives for ridge
Current Acacia iteaphylla may be replaced due to root aggression concerns in sandy soil. Considering: Heteromeles arbutifolia (Toyon), Rhus integrifolia (Lemonade Berry), or Sambucus nigra (Elderberry) — all native with appropriate root architecture for the ridge.
Zone: Ridge · Monitoring
Ceanothus 'Ray Hartman'
California Lilac (tree form)
Large Ceanothus hybrid, reaches 12–20 ft as a small tree. Masses of blue flowers in spring. Fast-growing, drought tolerant once established. Two planned for the ridge to provide height, wind screening, and canopy shade. Pairs with Pigeon Point cascading below.
Selected — 2 plants for ridge height spots
Zone: Ridge · CA Native

East-facing rock face plan: Cissus trifoliata on the rock, Pigeon Point cascading from the ridge above, Ray Hartman at two ridge spots for height and wind screening.

Clematis lasiantha
Chaparral Clematis · $14 at Plant Material
Truly native to LA hills. Vigorous climber with creamy white flowers. Twining leaf stems grip without root damage. Drought tolerant, deciduous. Fast coverage on east-facing rock.
Zone: East-facing Rock Face · CA Native
Vitis girdiana
Desert Grape · $13 at Plant Material
Native grape vine with tendrils that grip rock. Very drought tolerant. Fall color and small grapes for birds. Closest native equivalent to the original Cissus pick.
Zone: East-facing Rock Face · CA Native
Vitis californica 'Rogers Red'
CA Wild Grape · $12 at Plant Material
Stunning crimson-red fall color. Vigorous grower, tendril-climbing. Slightly more water than V. girdiana but incredible visual impact. Native.
Zone: East-facing Rock Face · CA Native
Clematis ligusticifolia
Western Virgin's Bower · $12 at Plant Material
Fast-growing native clematis. Feathery silver seed heads in fall. Twining climber. More vigorous than C. lasiantha, good for quick rock coverage.
Zone: East-facing Rock Face · CA Native
Cissus trifoliata
Possum Grape · Not stocked locally
Southwest native (not CA native). Hard to source in LA. Replaced by CA native alternatives above.
Deprioritized
Parthenocissus inserta
Woodbine
No adhesive pads, needs trellis support. Passed over for tendril/twining alternatives.
